I got my sketchbook in the mail mmm...about 2 months ago....aaaaand I've only used up three pages. I've been crazy busy but I guess that's not really an excuse as to why I have only "sketched" three times in 60 days. Either way-here is the first page-basically just a vomit of colors in the theme I've been into lately.

I'm working on a new painting...I guess I should say finishing up...since I did it in 3 days. Either way I'm kinda sorta happy with how it's turning out. I'm probably going to add one more layer and then do something semi crazy and stressful and add some graphic elements with spray paint?

Alice in Wonderland.

I heard it was a letdown. Just hearing that it was a letdown was a letdown. I'm hopefully going to see it tomorrow..wait its 6 am..okay-today. I guess maybe hearing it wasn't that great is a good thing- I can mentally prepare myself to watch and appreciate the movie in a completely visual way. Despite the plot being shallow or unable to live up to the hype that engulfed it- a movie can still be appreciated for its separate but not equal parts. Sometimes. So-heres what I decided to do because I was b.o.r.e.d.! It's not entirely what was in my head-but I had fun so I'm pretty content.

I Have An Offensive Mind At 5 am

I don't expect anyone to understand this. I have a pretty random thought process-especially at 5 am. I had to get this idea out yesterday. I was thinking of doing an ad campaign parody then I thought of the sour patch kids campaign where they do bad things to little kids. Then I thought-carebears are a lot more badass so of course the idea of good things doing bad had to be exaggerated. So ta da. Sorry if it offends.

Grad Without A Job

It seems like almost 90 percent of the population is hard up for a job right now. If you have a job then you are part of the lucky crowd...for now...because that's not to say that your job will still be there tomorrow. And if you are part of the crowd where everyday is a Saturday, well then you're in good company. When it comes down to it, I understand, it's tough out there, for everyone, but I don't think I can stress it enough-to the parents who look at me with those "We footed the bill for four year now why the hell are you still sleeping in and eating our food" eyes, those "This is just until I land my dream job" employers at Target or Meijers who think my greatest aspiration is to work in the fitting rooms or produce section and anyone else out there who just doesn't understand- THIS ISN'T WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING. COLLEGE GRADS ARE NOT BEING GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES . Honestly, I have been out of school for 9 months now and day in and day out searching for jobs-something with benefits, something that will put my mind my heart my hands to good use is next to impossible, more specifically for recent graduates-oddly enough, the group that should be offered some of the most possibilities.

So many creative people have so much to offer, most especially in this economy. And I find it absolutely painful, crushing, annoying even? that so much talent is going to waste because an exceptional amount of employers are not willing to take chances on newcomers. Yes, I have less experience in an agency, no I haven't worked for half a decade with Copywriters, Account Execs and hard to please clients, but I DID absorb all I could in four years at art school, I DID do my time as an intern and I AM willing to learn, to work my butt off and to come to the table with a fresh mind and a fresh perspective on creativity. So why doesn't that count for anything?

There are hundreds of job postings, but as I scroll down all I see is: SeniorArtDirectorSeniorCreativeSeniorDesignerSeniorSeniorSenior... If you don't have at least 5-7 years in the business you might as well not bother. I know there are quite a few senior creatives who are probably just as hard up for positions as us recent grads but how are we to ever excel to that position if no one ever takes a chance on us. And how are they to consistently reach their younger target markets or come up with current, experimental ideas without mixing in some fresh, just out of school, creative talent? Now, its a different story if your work doesn't fit the standards or expectations of the industry but for those of us that have all that creative energy in our heads, all that potential, and all that hardwork and knowledge that just isn't being utilized folding shirts at Old Navy or serving fries at a local restaurant, well it's just a shame. A waste. Creativity makes the world go 'round. Creativity can be used most at a time like this. This is a time for change, in so many different respects and I feel that includes the creative industry as well. Whether you are an aspiring Graphic Designer, Art Director, Illustrator, Photographer, it doesn't matter, we all deserve a chance to show 'em what we got.

Why do all toilet paper brands use animals as their mascots? I mean I get it-cute fuzzy things sell products sometimes, but..

Sounds like an absolutely great strategy-let's all use animals which don't use toilet paper...to sell toilet paper. GEENIUSS. Although...there probably is some genius marketing explanation out there that I didn't actually investigate which in turn is going to make me look like a complete moron but eh. Either way it's still quite silly that all those puppies and bears out there are being forced to represent something which they dont even use.

Some days I find it extremely hard to keep up with what is going on in the industry purely because it makes me wish I was actually involved in the industry at the moment. (But no pity party today). After reading through the articles and studying the newest creative pieces, I’m always glad that I did. Today was one of those days.

Burger King is not really my favorite place to eat—the thought of any fast food place for that matter makes me want to heave. But I have really enjoyed BK’s creative in the past couple years. I now have even more respect for the thinking and strategy behind the creative after the Digital Creative Director from Crispin Porter + Bogusky gave a lecture at my school. Granted, The King kind of freaked me out but nonetheless, it was genius. With all the areas of our life that Crispin infiltrated with BK branding, my thinking was that they were doing pretty good differentiating themselves from competitors like McDonald’s and Wendy’s. But after hearing about their new approach I was a little shocked.

Making Burger King a “sit-down” restaurant? There will be chandeliers, metal menus, brick and flat screens? Sounds kind of cool, but really? Not only does that increase the competition but it also seems…disgusting? Okay that’s totally my opinion, but isn’t that the point of FAST FOOD? It’s the food you eat when you’re too drunk to care, or the food you get when you’re still at the office at midnight, but if you actually sit down and spend time chewing the food, actually tasting it like someone meant to prepare it for you to savor it…wouldn’t that be kind of…disgusting? I don’t know maybe that’s just me, I’m not saying it’s all that bad, but definitely not sit-down worthy. Despite that oddity, I kind of appreciate this new tactic. I usually don’t enjoy huge change all that much but I do like challenge, thrive on it, need it. This seems like a challenge, and I’m excited to see if and how this affects the advertising.

Okay, so I have every means of social networking and communication possible, so what’s a girl to do but get a blog? Currently being the awesome jobless college graduate that I am, I thought maybe, just maybe this could give me some extra “oomph” in the “look at me look at me! I could definitely bring a lot to your company! No really i need a job! Okay please just respond i will do anything!” kind of job market. Maybe this would give potential employers a look inside my head..separate me from the masses upon masses looking for jobs at this very moment. But then, that genius revelation was instantly trumped by the thought that this could also quite possibly scare them away. Dilemma dilemma. Obviously I decided it was worth the risk, because who really wants a sane person working at an advertising agency anyway?
